Good Afternoon!

Welcome to Ms. Sheffield's class blog!

Today, we covered TP-CASTT in class. This is a method used in poetry analysis. TP-CASTT is an acronym for the following: title, paraphrase, connotation, attitude, shifts, title, theme. Title is listed twice. The best way to use this method is through a t-chart. Write the elements down the left side and add some detail to remind yourself exactly what to do for each part. Use the right side for evidence of each element from the poem.

For the first title, you want to describe what you think the poem will be about just by looking at the title. This is strictly a prediction. When paraphrasing, you will want to write a summary of the poem in your own words. Connotation is asking for meaning behind the literal reading. Are there alternate meanings from the literal words written? Shifts deal with changes in the speaker, setting, or attitudes. It can be a shift of any sort. The second title section is asking for a deeper meaning behind the title. Now that you've read the poem, is there a deeper meaning behind why the author chose that particular title? Lastly, the reader should analyze the theme of the poem. What is the overall meaning behind this poem?

This explanation is just a short version of how to use TP-CASTT. There is a more in-depth chart on pages 57-58 in your textbook.

Discussion:
TP-CASTT is intended for examining poetry, but...
Could this be applied to other forms of literature?
Could this be used when analyzing movies?
If so, what are some specific examples where this could be used?
If not, what is the reasoning?

  1. TP-CASTT is intended for examining poetry, but it is easy to be applied to other forms of literature such as fictions and biographies. I think the title of a fiction can give us some information about the theme or give us a hint of the theme if we use the TP-CASTT strategy.
I think it can be used for analyzing movies as well. It can be used to analyze some art projects as well or music master pieces. All creative work has similarity in the thought process so it can be applied to most creative projects. I do not know if it can be used in Math projects yet.

    1. I didn't even think about art projects or music pieces. It would be interesting to see if it could be applied somewhere in math. There may even be something similar, but it could be named something different. I have learned that there are many overlaps among subjects in school, we just never saw it as students.

  2. I do believe that TP-CASTT could be applied to other forms of literature. Movies are relative to incorporating TP-CASTT as well. One example that comes to mind are movies like Captain America and Spider Man. While some may be intrigued by the action and adventure, symbolic meanings are presented including justice and the protection of the greater good.

  3. I completely agree that the symbolic meanings are presented in these movies. We are working on a whole unit about the hero's journey at school, and the topic of Batman has come up often. We actually applied the "Batman Begins" movie to the hero's archetype and analyzed how the movie fits the archetype. The hero's archetype has underlying meaning, but it focuses more on the narrative side of the story. TP-CASTT is intended for poetry, but I could definitely see how its components could be used to determine underlying meaning in other types of work.

  4. I love Tcharts... Hatchet would be a great book/movie to incorporate this device.

  5. I also believe that this could be used in other forms of literature. Any book or short story could utilize this method. Another obvious way to use TP-CASST would be for plays. As for movies, TP-CASST could also be incorporated.

  6. I think TP-CASST would work really well with children's books. Authors often have deeper meaning in the title and characters. Also, there is usually a moral or lesson being taught, so this would describe that as well.
